The Metaverse is a virtual reality game where players can create and customize their own virtual avatars. Users can explore the different virtual worlds and interact with each other through VR headsets or a less immersive PC experience. It is similar to the experience provided by Facebook's Horizon Worlds and the Rec Room. While these games do not yet provide an immersive VR environment, they do feature similar concepts.
The first incarnation of the Metaverse was first described in the 1992 novel Snow Crash by author Neal Stephenson. This 3D virtual world could be inhabited by avatars of real people. A lot of science fiction and fantasy media includes the concept of a metaverse, but Snow Crash is still the most popular example cited by fans.
