The nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which runs the world's largest online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has stopped accepting cryptocurrencies for donations. The organization announced that they will close their Bitpay account in the update it published. Nearly 400 users took part in the vote after the WMF community requested on April 12 to stop accepting cryptocurrency donations due to environmental concerns.

71.17% of voting participants voted in support of the proposal, excluding unregistered users and new users. The organization, which has been accepting crypto donations since 2014, will now only receive donations in fiat currencies as of 2022.
